Arriving on Earth in the mid 21st Century, the Doctor encounters a strange young man standing outside the TARDIS immediately upon its materialisation. This young man, Guy Anwar, has been sent to the Doctor for a very special reason - to accompany him to an alien world where time travel is being used to create a theme park for the planets inhabitants. However, the Doctor soon realises that there is more at stake than an alien operative missing in the past, for the events of the planet are being overshadowed by a malevolent figure - who requires the Doctor as a pawn in a much larger game. The Doctor is being watched - but by whom, and why?

Things to listen out for...
- This is the first episode in what became a five-part story arc focussed on a mysterious figure shadowing the Doctor's every move. This creature, the Watcher, would only take centre-stage in the final release, The Ouroborous Heart, but already in this early serial his effect can be felt in various ways.
- The Temporal Society makes it first appearance here, as does the Doctor's new companion, Guy Anwar.
